Bonded DSL circuits can be provisioned two ways. The application
the DSL line will be used for will determine the best choice.
Load balancing is the process of spreading out data streams across
different connections. For example, say that we are on a two user
network and user one is downloading a large file. His data will
go through connection one (assuming two DSL connections). When
user two tries to use the internet, the load balancing router/software
senses that connection one is busy and routes user two's data
across the second DSL connection. In this situation, having two
3mbps circuits does not mean that each computer has 6mbps available
to them, only 3mbps (each computer only can use only one DSL circuit).
This method is ideal for offices with multiple users doing traditional
web browsing.
Circuit bonding is a very different approach to increasing your
bandwidth. Unlike load balancing, the traffic of all clients are
spread across all connections. So, unlike the above example, two
3mbps circuits will equal 6mbps (and each computer has all of
that bandwidth available, unlike above). However this approach
is more expensive. Circuit bonding requires a higher grade of
dsl with static PVC's and routers that can bond the circuit. This
is ideal and sometimes necessary for customers who are uploading
or download large files as well as those transmitting voice and
video over their connection or when running servers. This option
also gives you redundancy with dedicated IP space.
